Sweater Weather: What I look for when buying new sweaters

Since sweaters are a wardrobe staple for me, I am a bit particular when it comes to adding new sweaters to my wardrobe. When I love something, I want to be able to use it, wear it, and love it for years to come. This for me usually means spending a little extra to get quality pieces that will last a long time, rather than buying a cheaper quality product and having to replace it often.

There are a few key things I look for when buying a sweater:

  • The Material

I have very sensitive skin, and I’m a little picky when it comes to fabrics. I don’t like anything itchy or that could irritate my skin. I also tend to prefer natural materials such a cotton, wool, cashmere, linen, vs polyester or acrylic. For sweaters, cashmere is my personal favorite. It’s so soft and actually holds in heat to keep you warm, even if it’s not thick. It is definitely more expensive, but you’ll have it for years if you take care of it! Uniqlo also has great cashmere for a decent price point.

  • The Fit

I love an oversized sweater, so I tend to gravitate towards oversized fits or sizing up. I check to make sure the sleeves are a good length, since being petite some tend to be super long! Also the length of the sweater is also something I check for. Does it hit me at the right spot, or if its long, is it long enough for me to tuck?? Another key factor for me in the fit is the neckline. I prefer a v neck or a crew neck, and if I do go for a mock neck or turtle neck I make sure it’s a looser style since I don’t love the feeling of fabric on my neck all day.

  • The Color

I will wear a pop of color every now and then, but the core of my wardrobe is mostly neutrals. They’re easy to wear, and go with everything, and since I wear them the most I will buy neutrals more than any other color. To keep a neutral palette from being boring, I love having different textures or details on the sweater to give a bit more dimension. If it is a pop of color, I make sure it’s something that would go with other things in my wardrobe, or a color I would never get tired of. Blues and greens are ones I currently love, and they go great with neutrals,

Sweaters can get expensive, so I always do a lot of online searching to find something I love at a great price. Some of my favorite places to buy sweaters are Shopbop, Nordstrom Rack, and TJ Maxx. Also check off seasons!! Once the warmer weather starts to hit, sweaters tend to go on sale so it’s the perfect time to grab something you’ve been eyeing for a less price.
