Worth The Money? – The Dyson AirWrap

I got the Dyson Airwrap a while ago (you can find my previous blog post on it!), and even after over a year of owning it, I still think it’s one of the best things I’ve ever purchased.

I am by no means an expert in hair. Before I got the Airwrap, I used to blow dry my hair with a traditional hair dryer until completely dry, and then curl my hair with a curling iron. The whole process would take over an hour, and not to mention it was a lot of heat on my hair and I would have so much damage and split ends. Using the Airwrap gives my hair SO much volume and the look of doing my hair with a curling iron, but with so much less heat damage to my hair. It also only takes me less than 20 minutes to do, drying time included. The hairdryer attachment is so good, I never feel the need to use any other hair dryer again.

I have fine and long hair that has very little volume and is hard to hold a curl. For me, my favorite attachment to use on my hair is the 1.2-inch curling barrel. I section part of my hair in clips and will curl each section at a time, curling 1-inch pieces of hair at a time. It should only take 10-15 seconds per section, so I’m done pretty quickly!

After over a year of use, here‘s an overview of my own personal tips on getting the most out of your Airwrap:

  • PRACTICE!!

With anything new, sometimes it just takes a little practice! I watched so many tutorials and videos and just practiced until I figured out what worked best for me. There’s a bit of a learning curve, so don’t give up right away.

  • Dry your hair 80-90%!

Make sure your hair is mostly (but not entirely) dry before using a curling attachment. If your hair is too wet, it won’t catch on the curling attachment. If it’s too dry, it won’t hold. There’s a fine balance but once you get it, you’ll get it.

  • Remember to cool shot

Make sure you use the cool shot every time you curl. This seems like an unnecessary step, but it makes SUCH a difference on how your hair holds.

  • Pre treat your hair if needed

Before you use the Airwrap, put some hairspray or mouse if your hair doesn’t hold well. This will help add some grip to your hair, and help it hold better. Even though there’s no extreme heat, I still also put a heat protectant on my hair as well.  If you want to enhance your curls even more, after you use the curling attachment clip your curls and let them set. This will really help the curls last!

While there are dupes of this out there that are a fraction of the price, none come even close to comparing with the Airwrap. With the attachments included, it is essentially 6 different tools in one. That makes it less than $100 per “tool”, which I think is on par with quality hair styling tools. If you break it down by use per day, and you use the tool almost every day (I wash my hair daily) for a year, it’s less than $1.50 a day. That factored in with how much faster I can dry and style my hair, and how much less damage my hair has, I think the cost of the Dyson Airwrap is justified for me. While I got mine discounted (I found mine at TJ Maxx, but you can also get them discounted refurbished, or during a Sephora sale), if for whatever reason something happened to mine, I would without a doubt repurchase in a heartbeat because I really can’t picture my daily routine without it. I used to hate doing my hair and drying and styling it, and the time I save with this plus the easy of use make it worth every penny.
