Typical “New Year, New Me”: Favorite Workout Essentials

Like most people, working out more is on my New Years Resolution list. I’ve never really enjoyed going to the gym, or working out. But since working from home, I’ve had to find a way of working out that worked for me since I was no longer moving my body as much as I used to. When it’s warm out, I love to take my dog out for long walks outside, but its not that enjoyable in the colder months.  There are tons of at home programs and websites through subscription services, but for me I wanted to start off simple since I know I don’t work out often. For this, I love Youtube tutorials. They’re free, and there are SO many out there that you can find something that works for you. I personally love Popsugar Fitness and Chloe Ting workouts. They’re not too long (so they’re doable for someone like me), and they make it fun!

For working out at home, here are some of my must haves that I love:

  • Workout clothes that are comfortable and make you feel good

This seems small and silly, but for me I feel more motivated to work out when I feel good, and sometimes that means a cute matching set. It’s a small thing, but I feel more put together and motivated to work out. My favorite brands for workout clothes are Beyond Yoga (their space dye fabric is my go-to), Alo, and Varley. While these are more expensive brands than say Amazon, the quality is amazing and last for years. This means I only need a few quality staple pieces that I can mix and match, and they’re nice enough o wear running errands as well. For all of these brands, the Capri and cropped length fit me as full length, so no hemming needed! I always stock up when I can find them on sale, usually from Nordstrom Rack or on Shopbop. As much as I love them, I still can’t bring myself to pay full price.

  • A good pair of indoor sneakers

Just because you’re working out from home doesn’t mean you can skip the shoes. A good pair of sneakers can help protect your feet from any injuries. I bought a pair just to wear inside (also with an Asian household you don’t wear your outdoor shoes inside). After wanting a pair for years, I finally snagged a pair of APL sneakers on sale. I got the techloom pair, and after I got them I wondered what took me to long to get them. They’re SO light and comfortable, and don’t feel like I’m wearing anything at all.

  • Bala Bangles

There are other arm/ankle weights that are less expensive, but these were worth the splurge for me. Because of the design I can make them fit both my arms and ankles perfectly, and the bars move so I can redistribute them evenly as needed.  They’re also not as bulky as other models, so I can wear them around the house or on walks without it being in the way or noticeable. I have my eyes on the Bala bars next!

  • A yoga mat

This is one of the most important things for home workouts, since most people don’t have nice floors like the gyms do! I’ve been really liking doing Pilates or Barre classes, and the yoga mats really help with those workouts. I’m really not picky about the brand or anything for this!

Since I didn’t work out often, I take it easy and not stress out too much and try to do 3-5 work outs a week. If I can’t, it’s okay! My goal for next year is continue this, and potentially work my way to daily workouts, but I’ll take it one week at a time 🙂
