Fall is my favorite weather to dress for because of the cozy layers, and one of the biggest items needed for layering is jackets and coats. I tend to splurge a bit more on jackets for a better quality piece that I can have for years, especially if you invest in classic styles. Since they’re a layering piece I also make sure they work with many items in my wardrobe so I can get the most wear out of them, and be able to use them for different types of outfits.
There are four types of jackets/coats that I feel are must haves for fall, and you can choose within each category what kind of piece will suit your wardrobe the best!
The Trench Coat
The trench coat has been around for a long time because of it’s timelessness. It’s a classic piece that is a must have in every wardrobe, and can elevate even the simplest of outfits. While Burberry is most famous name when it comes to trench coats, there are so many great options out there from double breasted versions, ones with oversized cuffs or exaggerated sleeves that feel new and fresh, to colors other than the classic tan. I prefer my trench coats to have a bit more structure in the material (so I personally avoid crepe and silks) because I like the look of it more, and I tend to get frustrated by wrinkles.

The Wool Coat
Living in New England, warm coats are essential. I love how chic a wool coat looks, but still keeps you warm without having to look like a marshmallow. They make a great layering piece, or when belted look great on their own (think Olivia Pope in Scandal). I personally own the coat second on the left, and I love how classic it is without being overwhelming on my petite frame. Wool coats can be bulky, so make sure you consider proportions, and account for wearing thicker sweaters underneath! I always make sure none of my longer coats go longer than mid thigh.

The Leather Jacket
A great leather (or faux!) jacket will add a cool edgy vibe to any outfit. I own both real leather and faux lather jackets, and wear them all equally. I tend to stick to more basic colors for this like blacks and tans, as they are easier to wear and pair with outfits for me, so I will invest in better quality for those colors. But I do love a pop a color like great green or a burgundy, and All Saints makes their jackets in beautiful colors as well. If you do go for a real leather jacket, they only get better with age as the leather wears and breaks in! For leather jackets, I make sure that the sleeves aren’t too long or too tight, since I do like to wear them over sweaters. I also make sure to more my around around a bit when trying them on to make sure they’re not too tight across the back! It’s not something you normally check for when trying something on, but nothings worse than realizing you have limited movement when out and about.

The Shacket
Yes, here I am talking about shackets again. Clearly I just love them. They’re so easy to throw on, and some in a variety of lengths and fabrics that you can find one that suits your needs best. My all time favorites are from Artizia and Isabel Marant, while they’re a splurge the quality and craftsmanship is unbeatable, and if you intend to get a ton of wear out of it the price is justifiable. While a plain one is more classic, a printed version (I love a great plaid) can complete a simple outfit. For cooler months, I love pairing it with a knit sweater underneath!!
