Work Essentials: Shoes (Fall Edition)

At my office, I end up doing more walking than I usually think I do. This means that along with the look of the shoe, comfort and ease of walking are extremely important when buying shoes.

Key tip when buying shoes DO NOT buy shoes that are uncomfortable expecting them to break in. Yes, shoes will break in overtime and become more comfortable, but if they start out being painful why would you want to go through that? A lot of shoes I have bought in the past that were uncomfortable I never ended up wearing since I always dreaded them. That being said, that also doesn’t mean you won’t get blisters from comfortable shoes! When buying shoes, they always feel more comfortable when you try them on in the store than they do wearing them all day. I always make sure to try walking around in them for a bit to make sure nothing pinches or rubs.

There are a few shoe styles that I love to wear for work that are not only nice enough for work, but comfortable enough to wear all day.

  • Flats

Flats have come a long way from just the traditional ballet flat. I love the new rouched look that some flats have that give it a fresh, modern feel. Just make sure you get a pair that fit well, and don’t pinch your heels! I personally love flats with a more pointy toe, rather than rounded.

  • Loafers

A loafer is such a classic look for work, and there are so many new styles that that make them feel new and not menswear. I love any hardware or chain detail to give it a bit of glam, or go the opposite way and get a pair with a chunky lug sole (Prada and LV had versions of these that are super popular). I always love wearing them with jeans and a blazer for an easy but put together look!

  • Mules

Mules are easily my go to shoe for work. They feel like slippers, but look chic like a flat, what more could you want in a shoe?? While I did splurge on a pair of Gucci mules, I also have a ton of more affordable ones (which I love because you can buy into trends without too much guilt). Target always has amazing pairs that won’t break the bank. I like a good printed pair to go with more plain outfits, and of course a classic black pair is a must have in my book.

  • Booties

Since I’m petite, I do love to wear heels, but for work its not the most practical or comfortable. This is why I love booties, they look nice, and hold your ankles in so they are more comfortable. I also always buy booties with a thicker heel so they’re easier to walk in!

Also a great tip for new shoes, do NOT wear new shoes for the first time if you know you’re going to be on your feet all day. I always make sure to wear shoes for a short amount of time running errands, or going out to dinner, etc so my feet can adjust and break in the shoes a bit before wearing them all day! I also always keep an extra pair of comfortable shoes in my car if I wear a new pair to work jusstttt in case I need to switch midday!
