Fall Favorites: Trends

Even though it’s technically not fall yet, since every coffee shop is already selling pumpkin spice and stores are already selling Halloween décor, I feel like its acceptable to start getting excited to fall fashion.

Fall is hands down my favorite time of year to dress for. I love sweaters, boots, all of the layering, feeling cozy. For me it’s the time I can play around with fashion the most, especially since there are so many more elements to play with.

Here are some of things I’m looking forward to this fall in fashion:

  • Neutrals

Always a staple in my closet, but more prominent when it comes to fall, is a neutral color palette. Especially since I love to layer with jackets and coats, having a neutral palette helps coordinating an outfit become effortless since many things in your closet will go together. I will still have pops of color here and there (I love to wear colors when I’m having a bad or off day) but most of my wardrobe is neutrals. Tans, browns, camels, beiges, I have having varying shades to be able to mix around with.

  • Shackets

While this was a big trend last year, I don’t see this one going anywhere. More retailers are carrying them now in different fabric weights and colors and prints, and more noticeably in different price points meaning it’s a trend that’s more accessible this year. I did add two new ones to my wardrobe (both in neutrals) but one is a lighter weight that’s worn more as a shirt, and the other is a thicker lined one that is more of a coat. I love throwing them on over a t-shirt with jeans or even leggings for a low effort but still put together outfit.

  • “Comfortable” clothing

After being in a pandemic, comfort as a fashion trend has been so nice to see. Instead of heels, sneakers and slides are in. I love pairing sneakers with a silk skirt or something unexpected to make an outfit you’ve had forever feel fresh. Jeans shifted from skinny (even though I will still wear mine and never get rid of them), to “mom” jeans and straight leg. Athleisure is still going strong. These comfort elements can easily be incorporated to your existing wardrobe, and not cost a fortune. Wearing a sweatshirt  or graphic tee over a blazer with jeans and sneaker is such a chic outfit, comfortable but still looks put together.

  • Plaid

Plaid is such a fall staple, but it doesn’t have to be like the flannel that most people associate it with. I love plaid prints on coats and blazers, especially in neutral color tones to keep it a little more subtle. It also helps break up your outfit if you’re going for a monochromatic look!

  • Textures

While I stick to a mostly neutral color scheme, one thing I love to play around with is textures and details. I love getting chunky knits with woven textures, or sleeve details (Jonathan Simkai sweaters are sweater detail goals). It adds an unexpected twist to something as basic as a sweater.

What trends are you most excited to wear this fall??
