Summer Staple: Denim Shorts

Denim shorts are always a summer staple, and part of many people’s summer outfits. They’re cute, casual, and can be paired with almost everything ranging from a fancy silk tank, to a tie-dye cropped sweatshirt that is flooding everyone’s Instagram. You can wear them out to brunch, running errands, or as a beach cover up. They match pretty much everything. And now that most places make them in every color of the rainbow, in every length, and different levels of distressing, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all of the options. Everyone should have at least one “prefect” pair of denim shorts that make you feel your best, and that you’ll reach for over and over again. What that pair is will be different for everyone. For me it’s a pair of medium wash high-rise distressed pair from Zara that I’ve had for years.

Here are some of my favorite jean shorts at every budget.

  • AGOLDE “Parker” shorts: I love AGOLDE jeans, and these shorts are no exception. They’re a little bit longer in the back, which is perfect since you never have to worry about your bum hanging out when you bend over. (because no one wants that)
  • One Teaspoon “Bandit” shorts: These shorts run big so definitely size down, but they are super comfortable and go with everything. They are SUPER short! Even though they’re big at my waist I ended up getting my regular size so I could get a bit more length on them.
  • Frame “Le Cutoff” Short: These shorts are definitely a splurge, but are one of the most comfortable shorts I own. You can often find them on sale or at off price retailers for a much lower price! I love that they same style comes in regular denim, white, black, and colors (I personally own the olive green khaki material version).

$$: $50-$100

  • Levis “501” shorts: These shorts come in so many different color and distressed combinations; there is a pair for everyone. They’re a classic fit that will never go out of style, and a great addition to any closet.
  • Blank NYC: This brand is a great go-to for trendy styles that won’t break the bank. They have shorts that range from super high rise to low rise, longer style shorts to mini shorts, no distressing to fully shredded, if you’re missing a specific piece to add to your wardrobe this brand is a great place to start!

$: UNDER $50

  • Zara: Every year I get one new pair of denim shorts from Zara. They have the super popular “mom fit” style shorts that are so comfortable and exude a 90s vibe, and trendier pairs like ones with a paper bag waist or exposed button fly. I love their classic high rise distressed denim, and for under $30
  • Target: What can’t you find at Target?? Their shorts are super comfortable with a good amount of stretch, and such a good value. They have such a wide range of sizes and brands that you can find your new perfect pair. I love the ones from Universal Thread, they are the softest denim, the most comfortable, and the best part: under $20.
  • DIY!: Make a pair of denim shorts that are personalized how you want them by making your own! Grab a pair of old jeans you don’t wear any more (the looser and more oversized the better IMO), and cut them to your desired hem length. I usually cut mine to 2.5”, but you can go longer or shorter if you prefer. Tip: I usually start a little longer and adjust as needed since you can always go shorter but never longer! You can use sandpaper or take a razor to the shorts to give them a lived in or distressed look, or even roll and sew the bottom for a cuffed look.
